CAPE Town’s stadium was filled to about three quarters of its 52,000-people capacity on Saturday morning as African National Congress (ANC) supporters came in their droves to celebrate the party’s 103rd anniversary.
Vendors selling bright yellow ANC-branded clothing and other merchandise surrounded the stadium, built for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.
Inside the stadium people were singing and cheering and a group of Cape minstrels marched around the perimeter.
The official programme was supposed to kick off at 10.30am with the singing of the national anthem, followed by the readings of messages of support from the ANC Women’s League, ANC Youth League, ANC Veterans League, SA National Civics Organisation, the Congress of SA Trade Unions and the SA Communist Party.
However, by 11am, the official proceedings had not started, meaning that the rest of the programme will more than likely run late.
President Jacob Zuma was due to deliver the ANC’s January 8 statement at 11.30am, but it would now happen later
The statement is traditionally issued as part of the party’s founding celebrations and gives its programme for the year.
